The Cascades #1
A summer day at Cascade River State Park in northern Minnesota is not complete until you stop and take in the Cascades. It is early June and there has been plenty of rain. Lush green vegetation is all around you. The air is fresh, clean and easy to breath.
The Root Beer color of the river is easy to explain. The Cascade River flows through some peat bogs along its 15 mile journey to Lake Superior. While in the state park it drops more than 700 feet, 120 feet of that in the last quarter mile or so.
From the bridge here at the Cascades you can make a choice. There are trails along both sides of the river. The trails run from Lake Superior upstream into the mountains. Each one provides a different set of viewing opportunities. You could make a day of it and hike up one side and down the other. Round trip is about seven miles.
