Radiant Split Rock in B & W
In a nasty two day November 1905 storm two ships sank in the area that now is home to Split Rock Lighthouse along the Lake Superior shoreline in Minnesota. That storm sparked the need for the lighthouse which was completed in 1910. The US Lighthouse Service operated the lighthouse until 1939 when the US Coast Guard took over. They operated it until 1969. It is now a historical site and on of the most visited state parks in Minnesota. The lighthouse sits better than 100 feet above Lake Superior. Waves from the notorious wither storms have been seen to break over the cliff. It is easy to see how the ships came to their end and the need for the lighthouse.
