Temperance Falls #2 in B & W

It’s amazing what time and water can do to rocks. The Temperance River waterfalls are unique amongst the rivers along the North Shore of Minnesota. At one time a few years ago (Okay maybe more than a few years) the Temperance River wasn’t where it is at now. It’s main waterfall was a lot taller and wider. On the river bed stones were caught in the currents and rolled in a circle. The grind stones formed what is called potholes in the river bed. Round holes “drilled” into the rock under the river. They are also called cauldrons. These cauldrons grew in size and quantity over time. Eventually the walls between them broke down forming waterfalls in a gorge along the river. The Temperance River gorge contains many such waterfalls, some deep within the gorge and “hidden”. The plunge pool formed at the base of the old waterfall is still there. The river creates swirls in its flows which are visible on the surface.  As you walk along the gorge you can easily see the potholes.
